Cell Phone and Electronic Equipment Policy

A committee of faculty volunteers met on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 to continue discussions on discipline and attendance at BHS. The first issue discussed at length was cell phones and electronic equipment possession and use at school. After some very good dialogue, it was decided that procedures for monitoring usage should be focused on protecting productive classroom time while maintaining a manageable enforcement protocol. The following guidelines were adopted.

With privileges come responsibilities. Cell phones and electronic gear may be used before and after school as well as passing times and in the cafeteria. Students must have all equipment off and put away when the bell rings to begin the class period. Again, your responsibility is to turn off your equipment and stow it during class time. This includes other areas of the school such as hallways, bathrooms and all common areas. "OUT EQUALS ON, ON EQUALS OUT" Students violating the electronic equipment usage procedures will be subject to the following consequences:

First Offense:
Equipment confiscated and sent to administrator to be returned at the end of the school day with a call home.

Second Offense:
Equipment confiscated and sent to administrator to be returned at the end of the following day with a call home. Confiscation on Friday means it is returned at the end of the school day on Monday.

Third and Subsequent Offenses:
Equipment is confiscated and sent to administrator to be returned to parent or guardian at the end of the next school day.

Students refusing to relinquish their electronic device immediately upon request of a staff member will be considered insubordinate and treated in that light according to existing handbook guidelines.
